What Video To GIF does

Video To GIF is the video tool for GIF output: it turns a whole video into a looping animated GIF at the width, height, and frame rate you set. For MP4 or WebM results, use Video Converter, Video Optimizer, Video Resizer, or Video Color Changer.

It is the only video tool here whose result is an image rather than a video. The GIF has no sound, repeats endlessly, and can go wherever images are allowed, such as chats, documents, and README files.

How to use it

  1. Select Choose File and pick a short clip. When it loads, Width is set to the video's own width and its dimensions appear under Input Preview.
  2. Enter Width (px) and Frame Rate (fps). With Lock Aspect Ratio checked, Height (px) is calculated from the width.
  3. Select Render Preview. The finished animation plays under GIF Preview next to its Output size and Output dimensions.
  4. Select Download GIF to save it.

Formats and limits

  • Input: video files such as MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV, and AVI that the FFmpeg engine can decode.
  • Output: one animated .gif that loops forever, named with its size, for example clip-480x270.gif.
  • The entire video is converted from start to finish. There is no trim control, so shorten long recordings before loading them.
  • GIF allows at most 256 colors per frame, and this tool uses a fixed, general-purpose palette rather than one built from your clip, so gradients and skin tones can look banded or speckled.
  • Width, height, and frame rate must each be at least 1, with no maximum.

Settings explained

Width (px)
Output width. It defaults to the video's width once the file loads; smaller widths make far smaller GIFs.
Height (px)
Editable only with the lock off. Unlike Video Resizer, odd values are kept as entered.
Frame Rate (fps)
Frames kept per second, default 15. Around 10 to 15 is smooth enough for most screen recordings; higher values add frames and file size.
Lock Aspect Ratio
Keeps the source proportions by deriving the height from the width. With it off, the frame is stretched to exactly the size you type.

Privacy

The GIF is encoded in your browser by a WebAssembly copy of FFmpeg that this page loads from the jsDelivr CDN, or from its own server if the CDN cannot be reached. Your video is read locally and not transmitted anywhere, and the finished GIF is held as a temporary object in the page until you save it or select Clear.

FAQ

Why is my GIF so large?

GIF compression is weak next to modern video. Size grows with width, height, frame rate, and length, so reduce any of them. GIF Optimizer can shrink the result further.

Why does the GIF have no sound?

The GIF format cannot store audio, so the soundtrack is left out.

Can I convert only part of the video?

Not in this tool. It always runs from the first frame to the last.

Can I turn the GIF back into a video?

Yes. GIF To Video converts an animated GIF into an MP4, which is usually much smaller.
