What Image Converter does

Image Converter changes the file format while keeping the source width and height. Lossy output can change pixel detail, so compare the preview before saving. Pick Image Resizer when the dimensions need to change, Image Optimizer when you want a smaller file in the same format, and Image Color Changer to tint it.

It reads more formats than its sibling image tools, including GIF, AVIF, and SVG, and writes PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, or BMP, depending on what your browser can encode. Use it when an app or upload form rejects the file type you have.

How to use it

  1. Select Choose Image and pick a file. It is converted right away to PNG, the starting format.
  2. Open Convert to and choose the target format. The Converted Preview refreshes as soon as you pick one.
  3. For JPG, WebP, or AVIF, adjust Output quality.
  4. Compare the Original Preview and Converted Preview. Each shows the resolution and file size.
  5. Select the download button, which names the format, for example Download WEBP. Clear resets the file, the format, and the Status log.

Formats and limits

  • Input: PNG, JPG, JPEG, WEBP, AVIF, BMP, GIF, and SVG, if your browser can display it.
  • Output: PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, or BMP, named after the original with -converted added.
  • An animated GIF becomes one still frame.
  • An SVG is drawn once at the size written in the file. To choose the pixel size of the raster, use SVG To Raster.
  • The browser does the encoding, so Convert to lists only the formats your browser can write. PNG and JPG are always there. Chrome and Edge cannot write AVIF or BMP, so those two do not appear there.

Settings explained

Convert to
The output format. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency. JPG has no transparency. WebP keeps transparency with lossy compression. BMP is uncompressed and usually the largest.
Output quality
Appears for JPG, WebP, and AVIF only. It runs from 10% to 100% and starts at 92%. Lower numbers trade visible detail for a smaller file.

Conversion relies on the image decoder and encoder already built into your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and selecting Clear or closing the tab discards the loaded image and its converted copy.

FAQ

Why did my transparent background turn black?

JPG cannot store transparency, and this tool does not add a background color first, so empty pixels come out black. Choose PNG or WebP to keep them, or use Image Resizer, which fills them with white when it saves a JPG.

Does converting a JPG to PNG improve its quality?

No. PNG stores exactly the pixels it receives, so blur or blocky artifacts in the JPG remain. It only prevents further loss from later saves.

Can I convert several images at once?

No, it handles one image at a time. A new file replaces the current one and uses the format already selected.

Will the new file be smaller?

That depends on the pair of formats. Photos usually shrink going from PNG to JPG or WebP, while BMP output is usually much bigger. Image Optimizer is built for shrinking a file without changing its type.
