What Image Resizer does

Image Resizer changes an image's width and height in pixels, and it is the only one of the four image tools that does. For a new format go to Image Converter, to make the file lighter at the same size go to Image Optimizer, and to tint it go to Image Color Changer.

Type one side and, with the aspect ratio kept, the other side follows so nothing gets stretched. Switch that off to force exact numbers such as a 1080 by 1080 square. It scales down and up, though enlarging cannot add missing detail.

How to use it

  1. Select Choose Image and pick a PNG, JPG, or WEBP file. Width (px) and Height (px) fill in with its current size.
  2. Type a new Width (px) or Height (px). The resize runs about half a second after you stop typing.
  3. Choose PNG or JPG under Export format.
  4. Leave Preserve aspect ratio checked to keep proportions, or uncheck it to set both numbers yourself.
  5. Check the Output Preview, then select Download Result. The file name includes the new size, such as photo-800x600.png.

Formats and limits

  • Input: PNG, JPG, JPEG, and WEBP. Other types are refused with a note in the Status log.
  • Output: PNG or JPG. JPG is saved at 92% quality, and since it has no transparency, see-through areas are filled with white.
  • WEBP can be read here but not written. Use Image Converter afterwards if you need WebP again.
  • There is no fixed maximum, but a very large target can exceed your browser's canvas limit, and the log then reports that the resize failed.

Settings explained

Width (px) and Height (px)
The target size in whole pixels. Both start at the original size and are locked while a resize is running.
Export format
PNG, the default, is lossless and keeps transparency, which suits screenshots and graphics. JPG usually gives far smaller files for photos.
Preserve aspect ratio
On by default. Editing one side recalculates the other from the original proportions. Turning it back on resets the height to match the current width.

Privacy

Scaling works by drawing your picture onto a canvas at the new size, entirely inside this browser tab. The file stays on your computer and is not sent to any server; the Status log lives only in this page.

FAQ

Why does my enlarged image look soft?

Enlarging spreads the existing pixels over a bigger area, so edges blur. Scale down, or up only slightly, for the sharpest result.

How do I make a square image without squashing it?

This tool does not crop. With Preserve aspect ratio off, equal sides simply squeeze the picture. Crop it to a square in an editor first, then resize.

Does resizing make the file smaller?

Reducing the dimensions nearly always lowers the file size. For more savings at the new size, pass the result through Image Optimizer.

Can I resize an SVG or an animated GIF here?

No. Resize SVGs handles vector files, and GIF Resizer rescales every frame of an animated GIF.
