What GIF Rotate and Flip does

GIF Rotate and Flip turns or mirrors every frame of an animated GIF. Quarter turns and flips move pixels without changing them, so the picture stays exactly as sharp as it was.

You can also tilt a GIF by any angle. The canvas grows to fit the turned picture, and the new corners are transparent or a color you choose. The preview plays the result as you change it.

How to use it

  1. Select Choose GIF and pick a .gif, or drop one on the file row.
  2. Under Rotate, pick 90° right, 180°, 90° left, or Any angle and set the Angle.
  3. Tick Flip horizontally or Flip vertically to mirror the frames.
  4. For other angles, choose transparent corners or a Corner color.
  5. Check the size under the preview, then select Download GIF.

Formats and limits

  • Input: one GIF file.
  • Output: a GIF named after the original with -rotated added, or -flipped when it is only mirrored, such as cat-rotated.gif. Every frame, delay, and the loop count are kept.
  • Quarter turns swap the width and height. Other angles make the GIF larger, to the box that holds the tilted picture.
  • Angles from -180° to 180° in steps of 0.5°. Flips are applied before the rotation.

Settings explained

Rotate
None, 90° right (clockwise), 180°, 90° left (counterclockwise), or Any angle.
Angle
For Any angle: positive values turn clockwise and negative values counterclockwise. Tilted frames are resampled smoothly.
Flip horizontally and Flip vertically
Mirror the frames left to right or top to bottom. Both together look the same as a 180° turn.
Transparent corners and Corner color
Shown for angles that are not quarter turns. On by default, the corners around the tilted picture stay transparent; turn it off to fill them with Corner color.

Privacy

The frames are turned in this tab, and the GIF is encoded in a Web Worker, a background thread of the same page. Nothing is uploaded, and the file is only written when you select Download GIF.

FAQ

Why are the edges of a tilted GIF jagged?

GIF pixels are fully solid or fully clear, so a slanted edge against transparency is drawn with whole pixels. Turn off Transparent corners and pick a Corner color that matches where you will post the GIF.

Why is a tilted GIF bigger?

The picture is turned inside a larger box so no corner is cut off. GIF Cropper can trim the empty corners afterwards.

Does a 90° turn lose quality?

No. Quarter turns and flips only move pixels. The GIF is encoded again with its own palettes, but the colors stay the same.
