Animated Image Converter

Convert an animation between GIF, animated WebP, and APNG in your browser.

Open a GIF, an animated WebP, or an APNG and pick one of the other two formats. Frame timing and the loop count carry over, the source plays before you convert, and the result plays before you download it.

No animation selected.

You can also drop a file here.

Output
Choose a GIF, APNG, or WebP to convert.

What Animated Image Converter does

Animated Image Converter changes an animation between GIF, animated WebP, and APNG (animated PNG). Each frame keeps its delay, and the loop count carries over unless you change it.

GIF is supported everywhere but holds only 256 colors per frame. WebP and APNG keep full color and smooth transparency, and WebP files are usually the smallest. The source plays before you convert, and the result plays before you download it.

How to use it

  1. Select Choose File and pick a GIF, APNG, or WebP, or drop one on the file row. The source starts playing.
  2. Pick a format under Convert to. The source format is left out.
  3. For WebP, set WebP quality. Set Loop if you want a different loop count.
  4. Select Convert, watch the result play, then select Download.

Formats and limits

  • Input: GIF, APNG, or WebP, animated or still. A still image becomes a one-frame file.
  • Output: the other two formats, named after the original with -converted added, such as cat-converted.webp. APNG files end in .png.
  • WebP output needs a browser that can make WebP images, such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. In other browsers WebP is not offered.
  • APNG output is lossless. WebP output uses the quality you set. GIF output is reduced to 256 colors per frame, and pixels are either fully solid or fully clear.
  • Files over 60 million pixels in total, frames times width times height, are too large to convert in the browser.

Settings explained

Convert to
The format to make: GIF, WebP, or APNG, whichever two the source is not.
WebP quality
From 10 to 100%, starting at 90%. Lower values give smaller files with softer detail.
Loop
Forever, Once, or a set number of plays. It starts at the source's setting.
Convert
Makes the new file and plays it under Result. Changing a setting afterwards clears the result until you convert again.

Privacy

Frames are decoded with your browser's own image decoders and encoded in this tab. GIFs are encoded in a Web Worker, a background thread of the same page. Nothing is uploaded, and the file is only written when you select Download.

FAQ

Which format should I pick?

WebP for the smallest file on the web, APNG when every pixel has to stay exact, and GIF when the file must open everywhere, including in old apps and some chat services.

Why is my APNG so large?

APNG stores every frame without loss, in full. Convert to WebP for a smaller file, or lower the frame count first.

Why do my WebP or APNG colors look grainy as a GIF?

A GIF frame can hold only 256 colors, so smooth shading is reduced. WebP and APNG do not have that limit.
