What Animate A Still Image does

Animate A Still Image turns one picture into a short looping GIF with a motion effect: shake, spin, pulse, zoom, pan, bounce, wobble, hue cycle, or flash. It suits reaction images, stickers, and eye-catching icons.

Every effect repeats a whole number of times in each loop, so the last frame leads straight back into the first with no jump. The preview plays the GIF as you change the settings.

How to use it

  1. Select Choose Image and pick a picture, or drop one on the file row.
  2. Pick an Effect.
  3. Set the Speed, Intensity, and Length, and choose a Frame rate.
  4. Set the Width (px). For motion effects, choose a transparent or colored background for the edges the picture uncovers.
  5. Set Loop, watch the preview, and select Download GIF.

Formats and limits

  • Input: one picture your browser can open, such as PNG, JPG, WebP, or GIF. An animated picture uses its first frame.
  • Output: a GIF named after the picture with the effect added, such as cat-shake.gif.
  • Width from 16 to 1024 pixels; the height keeps the picture's shape. Length from 0.5 to 10 seconds.
  • Frames are the length times the frame rate, so 2 seconds at 20 fps is 40 frames. The frames times the width times the height has to stay under 60 million pixels.
  • Each frame holds up to 256 colors, so photos are reduced to the 256 that suit them best.

Settings explained

Effect
Shake jitters the picture. Spin turns it a full circle. Pulse grows and shrinks it. Zoom moves in and back out. Pan slides across an enlarged picture. Bounce hops it up from the bottom. Wobble tilts it from side to side. Hue cycle turns its colors around the color wheel. Flash brightens it in quick bursts.
Speed
How many times the effect repeats in one loop, from 1 to 8. More repeats in the same length play faster.
Intensity
How strong the effect is, from 0 to 100%: the shake distance, pulse and zoom size, pan and bounce travel, wobble angle, hue mix, or flash brightness. For Spin it shrinks the picture so its corners stay inside, fully at 100%.
Length and Frame rate
One loop lasts the Length. A higher Frame rate (10 to 25 fps) is smoother but adds frames and file size.
Width (px)
The size of the GIF. It starts at the picture's width, up to 480 pixels.
Transparent background
For motion effects. Edges the moving picture uncovers stay clear, or turn this off to fill them with Background color.
Loop
Forever, Once, or a set number of plays.

Privacy

Your picture is drawn and animated in this tab, and the GIF is encoded in a Web Worker, a background thread of the same page. Nothing is uploaded, and the file is only written when you select Download GIF.

FAQ

Why do the edges look jagged?

GIF pixels are either solid or clear, so edges against transparency are drawn with whole pixels. Turn off Transparent background and pick a Background color that matches where you will post the GIF.

How do I make the file smaller?

Lower the Width, the Length, or the Frame rate. GIF Optimizer can shrink the result further.

Can I combine two effects?

Make one GIF, then run it through a GIF tool such as GIF Speed Changer or GIF Border and Frame to add more.
