What Video Converter does

Video Converter is the video tool for changing format: it turns MP4, MOV, and WEBM files into WebM or MP4 using the recording features built into your browser. For color, file size, or frame size, use Video Color Changer, Video Optimizer, or Video Resizer.

It is also the only video tool here that takes a queue. Add several files, put them in order, and convert them all with one click. Unlike its siblings it does not use FFmpeg: each clip is played and re-recorded at its original resolution.

How to use it

  1. Select Add files and pick one or more videos. Other file types and duplicates are skipped.
  2. Click a queued file to preview it with its size, resolution, and duration. Up, Down, Remove, and Clear manage the list.
  3. Pick a format from Convert to. The line under it tells you whether this browser can record that format.
  4. Select Convert. Each video plays through out of sight while it is recorded, so a one-minute clip takes about a minute.
  5. When the batch finishes, saving starts on its own: a single result is saved as a video file, and two or more are packed into one ZIP.

Formats and limits

  • Input: .mp4, .webm, and .mov files that this browser can play. A MOV using a codec the browser cannot decode stops with an error in the Status log.
  • Output: WebM with VP9, VP8, or AV1 video and Opus or Vorbis audio, or MP4 with H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio. Names end in -converted.
  • Browser support varies: H.265 mainly records in Safari, and browsers missing the capture feature get a prompt to use Chrome or Edge.
  • The picture keeps the source width and height and is captured at up to 30 frames per second. There is no bitrate control; the browser picks it.

Settings explained

Convert to
Chooses the container and codecs. WebM VP9 + Opus is the default and a good general choice. MP4 H.264 + AAC plays on the widest range of devices. The VP8 + Vorbis option suits older WebM players.

Privacy

Your videos are decoded by the browser's own media player and re-encoded by its built-in recorder, all inside this page. Nothing is uploaded, and this tool downloads no extra processing engine. Converted files, and the ZIP for a batch, are assembled in memory and passed to your save dialog or downloads folder.

FAQ

Why does conversion take as long as the video?

The converter records each video while it plays at normal speed. A queue of three five-minute clips takes roughly fifteen minutes, so keep the page open until the save step appears.

Can I convert MKV or AVI files?

Not here, since only MP4, WEBM, and MOV are accepted. Video Optimizer does accept MKV and AVI and always writes an H.264 MP4, so it can serve as a route to MP4.

Can I choose the quality?

No. The recorder sets the bitrate, so the output may end up larger or smaller than the source. For control over file size, use Video Optimizer.
