What Images To GIF does

Images To GIF turns a set of pictures into one animated GIF, such as a slideshow of photos or a flip-book of drawings. Put the images in order, choose how long each one shows, and optionally fade from one to the next.

Pictures of different sizes are fitted into one frame size of your choice, and the preview plays the GIF before anything is saved.

How to use it

  1. Select Add Images and choose your pictures, or drop them on the file row. Adding more puts them at the end.
  2. Under Images, drag an image by its handle or use the arrow buttons to set the order, and remove any you do not want.
  3. Pick a Timing: the same delay for every image, or a delay for each image typed next to it.
  4. Choose the Output size and how images of a different shape are fitted.
  5. Turn on Crossfade between images if you like, set Loop, and watch the preview.
  6. Select Download GIF.

Formats and limits

  • Input: any pictures your browser can open, such as PNG, JPG, WebP, or GIF. An animated picture adds only its first frame.
  • Output: a GIF named after the first image with -animated added, such as photo-animated.gif.
  • Output size: the first image, the image with the most pixels, or a custom size from 1 to 4096 pixels per side.
  • The frames times the width times the height has to stay under 60 million pixels. If the GIF would be larger, the tool says so and Download stays off.
  • Delays are stored in steps of 10 ms, and browsers show 10 ms or less as 100 ms.
  • Each frame holds up to 256 colors, so photos are reduced to the 256 that suit them best.

Settings explained

Timing
Same delay for every image uses one value, 500 ms to start. A delay for each image adds a Delay (ms) box to every row.
Output size
First image and Largest image take the size of that picture. Custom opens Width (px) and Height (px).
Images that are a different shape
Fit shows the whole image with transparent bands around it. Fill covers the frame and crops the edges. Pad with a color shows the whole image with bands in Padding color.
Crossfade between images
Adds blended frames between each image and the next, and from the last back to the first when the GIF loops. Crossfade length runs from 100 to 2000 ms, with a blended frame about every 50 ms, and it is added to the delay of each image.
Loop
Forever, Once, or a set number of plays.

Privacy

Your pictures are decoded and drawn in this tab, and the GIF is encoded in a Web Worker, a background thread of the same page. Nothing is uploaded, and the file is only written when you select Download GIF.

FAQ

Why is my GIF so large?

Every image is a full frame, and crossfades add many more. Use a smaller output size or a shorter crossfade, or run the result through GIF Optimizer.

Why do my photos look grainy?

A GIF frame can hold only 256 colors, so smooth photos lose some shading. Video To GIF and GIF To Video may suit a long photo slideshow better.

Can transparent PNGs stay transparent?

Yes, with Fit or Fill. GIF pixels are fully solid or fully clear, so soft edges become one or the other. Pad with a color fills the background instead.
