What GIF Resizer does

GIF Resizer changes the pixel dimensions of an animated GIF and nothing else. It does not strip colors or drop frames to save space, which is the job of GIF Optimizer, and GIF To Video handles turning the animation into an MP4.

Each frame is rescaled with the Lanczos filter, a sharp resampling method. You can shrink or enlarge, though a bigger GIF cannot show detail the original never had.

How to use it

  1. Select Choose File and pick a .gif. Width (px) and Height (px) fill in with the animation's own size, and a first copy renders at that size.
  2. Type a new value in Width (px). While Lock Aspect Ratio is ticked, Height (px) is disabled and updates itself to match.
  3. To set both numbers freely, untick Lock Aspect Ratio and then type the height you need.
  4. The GIF re-renders after each edit. Check the Input dimensions and Output dimensions lines under the previews, then select Download.

Formats and limits

  • Input: GIF files, chosen through a picker that only lists .gif.
  • Output: a GIF with -resized added to its name, such as banner-resized.gif.
  • Sizes are whole pixels, 1 or larger. The tool has no upper limit, but huge dimensions cost more memory and render time.
  • No frames are removed and no frame rate is imposed, so the animation plays at the pace of the source.

Settings explained

Width (px)
The target frame width. It starts at the width of the GIF you loaded.
Height (px)
The target frame height, editable only with the lock off. Entering a height that breaks the original proportions stretches or squashes the picture.
Lock Aspect Ratio
On by default. It derives the height from the width and the source proportions, rounded to the nearest pixel. Ticking it again recalculates the height immediately.
Advanced logs
Writes progress to the Status log in 10% steps during each render.

Privacy

Your GIF is rescaled on your own device. The FFmpeg engine, compiled to WebAssembly, loads from the jsDelivr CDN the first time you use it, or from this site if the CDN cannot be reached, and then does all the work in the tab, so the animation is not transmitted anywhere. Nothing is written to disk until you select Download.

FAQ

Why can I not type in the height box?

Lock Aspect Ratio is on, so the height is worked out for you. Untick it to edit the height directly.

Why do colors look a little different after resizing?

Scaling blends neighboring pixels into new shades, and the resizer writes the frames without building a palette tuned for your image. Photos and smooth gradients can show slight banding as a result.

Will a smaller GIF also be a smaller file?

Usually, since every frame holds fewer pixels. The size lines under the two previews confirm it for your file.

Can I make a GIF bigger?

Yes, enter larger numbers. Expect a softer look, because upscaling spreads the existing pixels over more space rather than adding detail.
